When we talk about which bank specializes in credit cards, auto loans, banking, and saving accounts then the name comes is Capital One. Capital One is one of the largest bank holding companies located in the United States. It is also listed in the Fortune 500 as the 97th best company to work for. Also, in 2016, it was the 5th largest credit card issuer by purchase volume.

Being a technology focused-bank, Capital One financial corporation is a bank holding company specializing in credit cards, home loans, auto loans, banking, and savings products. Its headquarters are located in McLean, Virginia. 

The company helped pioneer the mass marketing of credit cards in the 1990s, and it is one of the largest customers of the US Postal service due to its direct mail credit card solicitations. Capital One 75% of revenue generates from credit card selling.

The minds behind establishing this big bank were Richard Fairbank and Nigel Morris. As per 2016 records the company employs 47,300 people across its various offices. It conducts its business in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.

  • Cash Flow Problems: There is a lack of proper financial planning at Capital One regarding cash flows, leading to certain circumstances where there isn’t enough cash flow as required leading to unnecessary unplanned borrowing.
  • Market Research: Capital One has not conducted market research within the market that is served for the past 2 years. As a result, it is making decisions based on 2 years old data, while customer needs may have evolved.
  • Lower Employee Retention Rates: Capital One has been facing higher employee turnover, which means many employees leave. The downfall of this is, that the company has to invest large sums of money into the training and development of its employees.
  • Centralized Decision Making: The decision-making is highly centralized, and decisions by teams need to be approved by certain officials. This reduces efficiency in operations by making them more time-consuming. It also leads to reduced innovation.
  • Lower Current Ratio: There occurs a problem in the current ratio where there are more liabilities than the available assets. This leads to a mismatch in the financials of the company.


Opportunities for Capital One

In the market, there also exist many opportunities through which a company can grow. Some of them are listed as.

  • Technological Developments: Technology comes with numerous benefits among many departments. Operations can be automated to reduce costs. Technology enables better data to be collected on customers and improves marketing efforts.
  • Increasing Income: There has been an increase in average household income along with an increase in consumer spending following the recession. This will result in growth in Capital One’s target market with new customers that can be attracted towards the business.
  • Population: The population has been growing and is expected to grow at a positive rate for the upcoming years. This is beneficial for Capital One as there will be an increase in the number of potential customers that it can target.
  • Interest Rate: Lower interest rates than compared to previous years provides an opportunity for Capital One to undergo expansion projects that are financed with loans at a cheaper interest rate.
  • Low Inflation Rate: The inflation rate has been low and is expected to remain low in the next two years. This is an opportunity for Capital One as its cost of inputs would remain low for the next two years.


Threats to Capital One

Threats are the factors that usually no one has complete control over. Here we can only try to minimize them, including:

  • Competitor Technical Advancements: New technological advancements by a few competitors within the sector constitute a threat to Capital One since customers who are drawn to this new technology may switch to competitors, reducing Capital One’s overall market share.
  • Currency Rate: The exchange rate fluctuates, which has an impact on a company like Capital One, which has international sales but local suppliers.
  • Increased Marketing Efforts: Due to the rise of digital marketing, there is an increasing number of promotional messages which are being sent by competitors. It clutters up the space, which leads to losing out on customers. You must also be well versed with a variety of digital marketing skills to get ahead of the competition.
  • Political Instability: There are always changing regulations in different nations. It exposes changes in trade regulations and requires compliance by the companies.
  • Competitor’s Promotional Messages: Competition’s increased marketing has posed a danger to Capital One. Customers are assaulted with many messages on most platforms, and there is more clutter than ever. Capital One’s promotional communications will be less effective as a result of this.
