The four major rivers contain hundreds of tributaries that used to provide river transportation to interior locations, but now serve a variety of tasks like drainage and flood control. Palembang City’s population density in 2016 was 4k people per square kilometer, with the highest density in Ilir Timur I District at 11k people per square kilometer and the lowest density in Gandus District at 916 people per square kilometer.
The national urban system has designated Palembang City as the National Activity Center. In the 2015-2019 National Medium-Term Development Plan, Palembang City is designated as a National Activity Center that serves as a marketing outlet for the Southern Sumatra region while continuing to strengthen linkage functions with international regional growth centers and as a center for implementing international-scale activities. Palembang is also envisioned as a hub for future viable communities supported by extensive economic and socio-cultural infrastructure, in order to prevent uncontrolled settlements (urban sprawl) induced by urbanization in the surrounding autonomous city.
